John Dramani Mahama, candidate of the National Democratic Congress, who led Ghana between 2012 and 2017, is back at the head of his country with many challenges. He begins by reaching out to the Sahel states.
The return of John Dramani Mahama to the head of Ghana marks the fourth political alternation at the top of the country. However, for the new president of Ghana, the emergency is very national. John Dramani Mahama will have to convince his people who put him in check against his rival and predecessor Nana Akufo-Addo in 2017.
And unfortunately for the new Ghanaian president, the economic health of the country is far from good. President Akuffo-Addo‘s last few months were marked by galloping inflation and a deterioration of the economy. Major social challenges must be added to these economic challenges. Access to drinking water, for example, remains a major issue. The country is also waiting for greater female representation in the high spheres of the state. On this last point, John Dramani Mahama has just announced his intentions with Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang who is thus the first female vice-president of Ghana.
Ghana also has a major score in terms of sub-regional geopolitics. As such, the new Ghanaian president did not wait for his swearing-in to send the signal with the delegations sent to the authorities of the Sahelian states. Our source close to the new president, as such, told us, the intention of John Dramani Mahama to quickly enter into « brotherly exchanges with the Sahel States in order to find lasting solutions » to the crisis that is shaking the ECOWAS zone, while indicating that the new president « does not exclude any solution ».
Finally, it should also be noted that Ghana is one of the states concerned by the jihadist and terrorist threat in the region. This data will undoubtedly be important in the upcoming planned exchanges with the Malian authorities in particular, which are the presidency of the Confederation of Sahel States.
